The high-end snack brand Liangpin shop has finally reduced its price.

Judging from the stock price performance, the capital market is paying for this news. However, returning to the business of good shops, there is still great uncertainty about the effectiveness of this price reduction.

1, change coaches, reduce prices, and good shops look for a "way out"

Good shops have been moving frequently recently. First, after the change of the board of directors on November 27th, Yang Yinfen, who resigned as the general manager in September last year, returned to the stage to replace Yang Hongchun as the general manager and the new chairman. Yang Yinfen believes that in the past, under the concept of high-quality snacks, the company failed to balance the relationship between quality and price, and made some qualities that consumers didn’t care about, which caused misunderstandings to users. The competition for the "lowest price" has intensified in recent years. Pinduoduo’s brilliant financial report proves that consumers are increasingly sensitive to prices. Consumer brands at different tracks either announced price cuts or launched low-price sub-brands, and the trend of low prices has swept the entire consumer industry.

Specific to the leisure snack track, in recent years, it has been highly sought after by the capital market, and most of them are snack discount stores and special sales stores that focus on cost performance and low price discounts. These new snack brands have greatly affected the status of the old snack giants in the rivers and lakes, and even have the trend of overtaking.

On the one hand, the price reduction measures of good shops are to deal with the impact of various new snack models on the offline business of good shops, on the other hand, it is also necessary to solve a problem, that is, the balance between high-end positioning and price reduction strategies.

In fact, if you simply compare the price, it is difficult for a good shop to compete with a snack shop. According to the White Paper on Hard Discount of Snacks in China released by new distributors in October, the price of discount snack shops sinking into the community is 20%-40% cheaper than that of traditional retail stores.

According to the research report of Everbright Securities, by the end of 2022, the customer unit price of a good shop was in 70 yuan, while the snacks were only 30-40 yuan when they were busy, but at the same time, the daily income of a good shop was only 6,000 yuan, while the snacks were as high as over 10,000 yuan when they were busy. This means that snacks are very busy, and snack hypermarkets really use low prices as weapons, which has successfully increased the revenue of single stores.

Although the gross profit margin of high-end snack brands such as good shops is relatively high because of high pricing, with the loss of customers and the decline in revenue, it is difficult for good shops without scale advantages to maintain high gross profit. According to the financial report, in the third quarter of this year, the gross profit margin of good shops from franchise business and direct retail business decreased by 3.01 and 4.97 percentage points respectively, and the profitability continued to decline.

After the overall price reduction, it will inevitably further impact the profit space of good shops, which puts forward higher requirements for the supply chain efficiency and cost control of good shops.

Different from the pursuit of low prices in snack shops, Yang Yinfen has repeatedly stressed the need to adhere to the road of "high-quality snacks" while announcing the overall price reduction. Price reduction and high-end, good shops seem to have to pay attention to both. Compared with the main brand, it still needs to carry high-quality positioning, and it needs big stores and image stores to establish brands. But the problem is that it seems that the positioning between the two is not clear inside the good shop. Although stubborn snacks mainly sell third-party brands, they are directly supplied by docking snacks and water drinks brands, but many products sold in stores originate from the existing supply chain of good shops, and the only difference is whether they are branded or not.

Although the shared supply chain provides convenience for the expansion of snack stubborn families, consumers can buy the same products at a lower price, which will inevitably affect the sales of good shops. After the large-scale price reduction of good shops, the price band is gradually approaching the stubborn snack family, and the competition between the two may bring greater internal friction.

For good shops, it is still a top priority to sort out the positioning and boundaries between internal brands and think about the effectiveness of the "price reduction" strategy at the level of the whole group to maximize the efficiency of the overall business.

3, the market has changed, and good shops have to go through "pain"

When discussing the price reduction measures of good shops, a big background that cannot be ignored is that the situation of snack track is different from the past.

In recent years, the overall growth of snack track has slowed down. According to the consulting report of Ai Media, the market size of snack food industry in China will increase from 410 billion yuan to 1,165.4 billion yuan from 2010 to 2022, and it is estimated that the market size of snack food industry in China will reach 1,237.8 billion yuan in 2027, and the snack food market will change from a rapid incremental market to a slight incremental market. Based on this, Ai Media Consulting believes that the leisure snack market will be more competitive in the future, and innovative products will replace old-fashioned products.

The intensity of competition on the track can be seen from the price. Another important signal is that the fierce competition of snack track has reached the turning point, especially the snack supermarket track with the highest price, and industry mergers and acquisitions have begun to appear frequently.

The homogenization of snack track determines that low-price competition is the norm, and only scale can bring profit space and keep the brand alive. Behind this series of actions, it is the snack brand that tries to unite Lian Heng, expand its scale advantage and seize the right to exist.

The delay in realizing large-scale profit of snacks introduced by good shops stems from the lack of scale. At the performance conference in the first half of 2023, Liangpin Store once said that the profits of stubborn snacks can only be basically tied, because the company entered the discount snack format late and has not yet formed a scale advantage, and there will be a scale effect after more than 500 stores. Therefore, the good shop put forward the plan of opening 500 new stores in 2023.

However, the problem is that even if the number of stubborn snacks stores is expanded to 500, the scale effect is still a drop in the bucket compared with the merged snacks that are busy and Zhao Yiming snacks. Even if snacks are busy and Zhao Yiming snacks fail to form an absolute leading edge, which means that the price and scale competition in the industry will continue.

At present, snack shops that are still struggling are still rapidly expanding their stores. For good shops, price reduction is an active choice and a passive challenge. Snacks are an optional consumer product with obvious homogenization. Consumers lack loyalty to the brand, and the price is often the core competitiveness. At this time, there is still a chance to compete with snack mass-market stores by reducing the price. If we continue to stick to the high-end positioning, the good shop may become a "small and beautiful" brand, but the market share will inevitably decline.

Interestingly, after two consecutive daily limit stops, Liangpin Store issued an announcement on the evening of December 4, saying that the products covered by the price reduction measures accounted for only 13.5% of the total revenue in the first half of the year.

The implication is that this price adjustment is only an adjustment within the controllable risk. China and the EU reaffirm the vitality of China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership, and are willing to make joint efforts to achieve peace, prosperity and sustainable development, and promise to support multilateralism and respect international law and basic norms of international relations with the United Nations at the core. The two sides pledged to uphold the Charter of the United Nations, international law and the three pillars of the United Nations, namely, peace and security, development and human rights.

China and the EU are committed to strengthening cooperation, especially within the framework of the existing bilateral dialogue. The two sides promised to make decisive progress in the negotiations in 2019, especially in terms of investment liberalization commitments, so as to reach a high-level China-EU Comprehensive Agreement on Investment in 2020. The high level of the agreement will be reflected in the substantial improvement of market access, the elimination of discriminatory requirements and practices affecting foreign investors, the establishment of a balanced investment protection framework and the inclusion of provisions on investment and sustainable development. 5. China and the EU are committed to ensuring equal and mutually beneficial cooperation in bilateral trade and investment. The two sides reaffirmed their willingness to strengthen bilateral economic cooperation, trade and investment, and to give each other broader, more convenient and non-discriminatory market access. The two sides are committed to expanding market access for mutually supplied agricultural products and food in a transparent and predictable manner. 6. The EU supports China’s progress in accelerating its accession to the WTO Agreement on Government Procurement, and China is willing to improve its bid in an ambitious way. China will actively promote relevant work as soon as possible.

The two sides stressed the importance of following international standards in intellectual property protection and law enforcement. The two sides will continue to work hard to achieve substantive results in mutually agreed priority areas such as malicious registration of intellectual property rights, intellectual property law enforcement and trade secrets. The two sides are committed to creating a legal environment in which creators, inventors and artists can license their rights according to market terms and effectively enforce these rights in courts and related institutions.

The two sides noted the recent progress in the negotiation of the agreement on geographical indications, and welcomed the initial agreement on the text and the protection of most geographical indication names of both sides. Both sides welcome the ongoing discussions in the Working Group and agree to continue to strengthen exchanges and cooperation. The two sides recalled that international law, especially the Charter of the United Nations, is applicable to and crucial to maintaining peace and stability in cyberspace. The two sides worked hard to promote the formulation and implementation of internationally accepted national codes of conduct for responsible cyberspace within the framework of the United Nations. The two sides will strengthen cooperation in combating malicious activities in cyberspace under the China-Europe Network Working Group, including cooperation in intellectual property protection.

5G will provide basic support for future economic and social development. The two sides welcomed the progress and further exchanges in the dialogue and cooperation mechanism based on the 2015 China-EU 5G Joint Statement, including technical cooperation between industries.

12. Both sides welcomed the successful holding of the Fourth China-EU Dialogue on Innovation and Cooperation. The two sides confirmed their willingness to extend the China-EU Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement.

The two sides are committed to strengthening exchanges and cooperation in the fields of education, tourism, researchers’ exchanges, culture, media, youth and sports through the China-EU high-level foreign language exchange and dialogue mechanism. The two sides look forward to the fifth meeting of the China-EU High-level Foreign Language Exchange and Dialogue Mechanism to be held in Brussels. The two sides welcomed the positive results of the China-Europe Tourism Year in 2018 and promised to continue to strengthen cooperation in the tourism industry and personnel exchanges.

Global challenges and governance

13. China and the EU recognize the responsibility to play an exemplary role in supporting an open, balanced and inclusive global economic policy, which will benefit all parties and promote trade and investment. The two sides firmly support the multilateral trading system based on rules and centered on the World Trade Organization, oppose unilateralism and protectionism, and are committed to abiding by WTO rules.

The two sides reaffirmed their joint commitment to WTO reform and cooperation to ensure its relevance and meet global trade challenges. To this end, the two sides will step up discussions aimed at strengthening international rules on industrial subsidies on the basis of the existing work of the China-EU Joint Working Group on WTO Reform. The two sides will also continue to exchange views on other authorized WTO issues.

The two sides welcomed the work done so far by the China-EU Joint Working Group on WTO Reform, and agreed to continue efforts to resolve the crisis of the WTO Appellate Body and build consensus in other areas.

17. The two sides will cooperate to improve the economic, social, financial, financial and environmental sustainability and compatibility of Eurasian connectivity. Regarding the Iranian nuclear issue, the two sides believe that the comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue is a key link in the global nuclear non-proliferation system and a major diplomatic achievement approved by UN Security Council Resolution 2231. They reaffirm their commitment to the sustained, comprehensive and effective implementation of the agreement and make joint efforts to safeguard Iran’s economic interests. The two sides recalled the importance of the Arak heavy water reactor reconstruction project and the necessity of continuing to work together in this regard. The International Atomic Energy Agency has issued 14 consecutive reports confirming that Iran has fulfilled its nuclear-related commitments, and both sides welcome this.

The two sides support the DPRK-US dialogue to achieve a peaceful solution and the DPRK-ROK reconciliation. The two sides emphasized the importance of full and complete implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions by all parties.

The two sides are committed to working together and closely coordinating the peace process in Afghanistan, which must be comprehensive, inclusive, "Afghan-led, Afghan-owned" and a political process that can bring lasting peace. The two sides agreed to support international and regional efforts for the stability and security of Afghanistan, so as to promote the economic and social development of Afghanistan and strengthen regional economic interconnection before, during and after the peaceful settlement of the Afghan issue.

20. The two sides pay close attention to the evolving situation in Venezuela and are willing to work with other parties to promote a political, peaceful and democratic solution decided by the Venezuelan people.

21. China, the European Union and its member States are parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. They respect the maritime order based on international law and safeguard the freedom of navigation and overflight enjoyed by all countries in accordance with international law. The EU welcomes the consultations between China and ASEAN countries to reach an effective Code of Conduct in the South China Sea (COC). The two sides called on all parties concerned to engage in dialogue, resolve disputes peacefully and avoid acts that might aggravate tensions.

22. The two sides agreed to strengthen peace, security and defense cooperation and high-level exchanges, including maritime security and combating piracy, support Africans to solve African problems in an African way, so as to maintain peace and security in Africa, and support information exchange on crisis management and UN peacekeeping operations.

23. On the Ukrainian issue, China and the EU recalled UN Security Council Resolution 2202 and called for the full implementation of the Minsk Agreement.

24. The two sides also exchanged views on Myanmar.

  The mountains present a desolate scene. It was strangely quiet around, and a natural and peaceful atmosphere hung over the valley. In the silent forest, Li Qijun, a 32-year-old farmer, concentrated on finding traces of his prey.


  At dawn, he got up, took a single-barrel shotgun, backpack, plastic woven bag and fruit knife about 1 meter long, and went up the mountain alone. At this point, he had walked for more than two hours, but found nothing.


  Halfway up a mountain, he saw a petite baby panda through the gap in the bamboo forest. In the warm sunshine, it chews bamboo like no one’s watching, and sometimes holds its head high and looks at the world around it.


  With a bang, the panda was shot in one of its hind legs. It struggled to run a short distance, and then it was shot in the abdomen by the second shot. This baby panda, only 9 months old, instantly fell in a pool of blood.


  Li Qijun took out the fruit knife he carried with him and quickly peeled off the whole panda skin and put it into a plastic woven bag. The bones and meat of the panda were abandoned in the same place. Walking in the direction of going home for an hour, he soaked the panda skin in a cold stream. The flowing water can not only keep it fresh, but also make it difficult to give off the smell.


  It was four or five o’clock in the afternoon when I returned home. That night, Li Qijun called a man named Hu Hongqiang to tell all this, and the two of them excitedly discussed the next plan. They thought that the dream of making money for a long time would come true soon.


  Who can get the panda skin?


  Hu Hongqiang and Li Qijun are three years old. Although they are not fellow villagers, the two families are only a few miles apart and have been playing together since childhood. In the mouth of family and folks, both of them are "honest people".


  Hu Hongqiang’s brother, Hu Hongwu, remembers that for a while, they didn’t have much contact. But since Hu Hongqiang met a man named "Gan Hailong", he and Li Qijun have frequent contacts again. Hu Hongwu can often hear his younger brother who lives next door answering Li Qijun’s phone in the middle of the night.


  Hu Hongqiang met Gan Hailong through a man named "Old Man Peng". One day in 2004, Peng Ruyi, a farmer from Longdong Town, Baoxing County, Ya ‘an City, Sichuan Province, was about to go home after seeing the illness from the orthopedic hospital in the neighboring county. While waiting for the bus, he saw a man of similar age waving to him upstairs in the station hotel, and then the man greeted him with a big smile: "Come up and have a cup of boiled water."


  Old man Peng felt that he had nothing to do anyway, so he happily went upstairs to "drink a cup of boiled water." The man upstairs claimed to be Gao, and said that he wanted to do some business in Baoxing County recently, and he hoped to stay at Peng’s house for a few days. Old man Peng has always been hospitable, so he left his home address and phone number to old man Gao. A few days later, the old man Gao went to live in Peng’s house.


  The skinny Peng Ruyi pointed to the second floor of his home and mysteriously told the reporter: "That’s the one, with a woman!"


  He recalled that at the beginning, the old man Gao only said that he had come to buy medicinal materials. Slowly, he expressed interest in black bear skin, and then he asked Peng if anyone could get giant panda skin.


  Peng promised to help inquire. Soon, the old man Gao brought another man named Gan Hailong. Gan introduced himself that he was in his early 50 s and worked for a Japanese boss who opened a factory in Chongqing. Lao Gao and Lao Gan lived together in Peng Jia, and quietly inquired during the day in Longdong, Wulong and Yongfu areas of Baoxing County.


  Baoxing County, formerly known as Muping, is located in the transition zone between Sichuan Basin and Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Alpine meadows, steep mountains and subtropical climate provide a favorable environment for wildlife habitat. In ancient times, it was the settlement of the Qiang people in Tsing Yi. Before 1930s, it was the jurisdiction of Tibetan Tusi. In 1869, French priest David discovered a new animal species in Dengjiagou, Baoxing County. This black and white fat guy was named "panda".


  Today, this wedge-shaped land embedded between Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture and Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan is locked as the core protected area of giant pandas. According to the results of the third national survey of giant pandas from 1999 to 2003, there are 143 giant pandas in Baoxing County, ranking the top three among the counties and cities with giant pandas in China.


  However, Baoxing County has always been relatively poor, and its resources mainly include "three heads": wood (wood), water head (hydropower) and stone (building materials). Baoxing people used to live by cutting down trees. After the natural forest was banned in 1998, the county began to develop hydropower and stone industry by taking advantage of the gap between mountains and valleys.   One day, old man Peng wanted to go somewhere and called a "motorcycle". The owner happened to be Hu Hongqiang. Peng laotou then helped Gao laotou and Hu hongjiang connect the line.


  Gao Laotou told Hu Hongqiang that it was not him who wanted to buy panda skin, but someone else. So under the introduction of Gao, Hu Hongqiang met Gan Hailong at Peng’s home for the first time. Old man Peng remembers that Hu Hongqiang once said to Gan Hailong, "It’s easy to get panda skins. Find some pig and sheep bones to burn. The giant pandas will come when they smell the smell."


  Gan Hailong immediately said: as long as there is panda skin, the big boss in Japan can pay a high price, and the big boss is very capable.   After meeting with Gan Hailong, Hu Hongqiang let Gan live in his home for more than 20 days. One day, a man named Feng Xiangyun claimed that he had the goods, but he had to pay a deposit of 50,000 yuan first. After some lobbying by Hu Hongqiang, Feng Xiangyun agreed to pay only 10,000 yuan to see the goods. Gan Hailong agreed to give money, but let Hu Hongqiang write an IOU, and the IOU must be written as 15,000 yuan.


  Hu Hongqiang gave 10,000 yuan to Feng Xiangyun. After Feng took the money, he "played missing". Later, Gan Hailong left. One day, Hu Hongqiang’s wife Dong Moumou received a phone call from Gan Hailong.


  "He said on the phone that if he didn’t get the money, he would kill our family." The 36-year-old rural woman shivered with memories.


  Hu Hongqiang later thought of Li Qijun. Because the village where Li lives has a tradition of hunting, his father is also a famous local hunter. After several contacts, Li Qijun accepted the deal.


  June 5th, 2007 is the "World Environment Day", and countless people are worried about global warming. On June 6th, Li Qijun shot and killed the giant panda.


  Who directed all this?


  Like thousands of local ravines, Li Qijun hides the red ravine with giant panda skin, hidden in the lush mountains.


  On the second day after hitting the giant panda, Li Qijun took Hu Hongqiang to the stream where the giant panda skin was hidden. After reading it, Li Qijun was afraid that Hu Hongqiang would steal the panda skin, and went up the mountain again to hide it in a different place.


  After returning home, Hu Hongqiang quickly called Gan Hailong to report "good news" and agreed to meet in Rongchang County, Chongqing. On June 12th, Hu Hongqiang met Gan Hailong and "Japanese boss’s translator" in a hotel near Rongchang County Bus Station. The three agreed that the transaction price was 500,000 yuan and the delivery date was June 14th.


  Li Qijun asked to go to Rongchang with Hu Hongqiang. The two rented a minivan and set off at noon on June 15th. Li Qijun also called his girlfriend Zhang Ruiying and only told her to go to Chongqing to play. Before going out, Hu Hongqiang borrowed 500 yuan from his relatives and told his wife that he was delayed in Baoxing that night and would not go home.


  At about 2 am on June 16th, Hu Hongqiang and his party arrived in Rongchang County, stayed at Hongyu Hotel not far from the bus station, stuffed the goods under the bed, and then contacted Gan Hailong.


  Gan Hailong came to inspect the goods with "the translator of the Japanese boss". When Hu Hongqiang dragged the giant panda skin out from under the bed and just presented it to the buyer, suddenly, a group of policemen broke in from outside the door. Li Qijun and Hu Hongqiang were quickly handcuffed and sent to Rongchang County Detention Center.
