Chen Zishan’s new book Zhang Ailing: Interpretation of the Legend Behind the Rumors

Chen Zishan, a professor at East China Normal University, recently published the unknown Zhang Ailing by the Commercial Press, which is his latest anthology on Zhang Ailing. Since the publication of two volumes of Zhang Ailing’s Congkao in 2015, Chen Zishan has made new explorations, textual research, collation and interpretation of Zhang Ailing’s literary historical materials in five years, "thinking that he has made new discoveries".

On July 31st, the new book launch conference "The Legend Behind the Rumor" of The Unknown Zhang Ailing was held in the flagship store of Shanghai Duoyun Academy. Chen Zishan, a professor at East China Normal University, Zhang Wei, a research librarian of Shanghai Library, and Zhou Limin, executive deputy director of Ba Jin’s former residence, gathered together to talk about the research context of Chen Zishan’s "Zhang Xue" and the style of Zhang Ailing’s works, and shared Zhang Ailing in their hearts.

"Among the modern writers in China, apart from Lu Xun, Zhang Ailing is the one who designs and binds most of her works." After discovering and researching many stories behind the covers designed by Zhang Ailing for her works, Chen Zishan concluded.

In the 1940s, The Legend was published in three editions, all of which were designed with the participation of Zhang Ailing. This book contains Zhang Ailing’s early representative works. At that time, she was only in her early twenties. She used this book to fulfill her wish of "becoming famous before it is too late" and established her irreplaceable position in the history of modern literature.

Among the three editions, the cover of the updated edition introduced in 1946 is the most famous. Chen Zishan introduced that the main body of the picture is a picture of a beautiful lady in Yat Sen Qing, borrowed from the famous painter Wu Youru’s "Ode to Today", and the incongruous "strange image" on the upper right is Zhang Ailing’s handwriting. Her explanation of this image is that "modern people who appear like ghosts are very curious and diligent to peek inside" and are peeking at what the people inside are doing.

"Such a scene, or the peaceful daily life of Chinese for thousands of years, has been broken by the intervention of" modern people ",so the meaning of this cover is very rich and complicated." Nightmare in the Red Chamber, the first edition of Taiwan Province Crown in 1977, is the only academic work of Zhang Ailing, and the cover design of this book was also completed by the author himself. A Dream of Red Mansions is the pinnacle of China’s classical novels, while Peking Opera is the essence of China’s plays. Zhang Ailing adopted the visual image of Peking Opera facial makeup in her design, and skillfully combined these two aspects of classics.

In people’s general impression, the relationship between Zhang Ailing and May 4th literature is alienated. However, Chen Zishan specifically mentioned that Zhang Ailing’s writing has a deep relationship with the May 4th New Literature Tradition, and the writing of the May 4th Legacy is an example. According to textual research, Zhang Ailing is quite familiar with Lu Xun’s works, and even has read some articles carefully and repeatedly, and is familiar with the inconspicuous details in the novel.

However, Zhang Ailing did not fully accept the May 4th literary creation. "She thought that the syntax of many vernacular literary works at that time was borrowed from foreign languages, and she did not appreciate this practice, so she tried to learn from China tradition and applied the writing style of A Dream of Red Mansions to vernacular writing, which proved to be quite successful." In his view, Zhang Ailing’s writing is very "genius". She combined part of the spirit of the May 4th vernacular with the traditional writing style of China’s classical novels, leaving a unique stroke in the history of modern literature in China.

She prefers to hide herself.

At the age of 12, Zhang Ailing published her first novel "Unfortunate She" in the school magazine "Fengzao" of Santa Maria Girls’ School, where she was studying at that time. Since then, there have been many words in newspapers and periodicals. Zhang Wei, who used to work in Xujiahui Library, traces the past of the legendary writer’s creation in his youth by using the few school journals that published Zhang Ailing’s works. "Now you see more, is her work on" Fengzao ". But when I was in the library, I noticed a thin booklet called Guoguang, in which her Cow and Farewell My Concubine were both published. This small publication was initiated by Zhang Ailing’s Chinese teacher Wang Hongsheng, who encouraged Zhang’s creation, even though she was only a teenager, which showed the strong literary atmosphere of the girls’ middle school at that time. "

However, Zhang Ailing’s early years really attracted public attention, starting with Dream of Genius. This is an essay written by the 19-year-old in the prize-winning essay-writing activity of Shanghai West Wind Monthly, and she finally won the "honorary prize", ranking at the bottom of all the winning works. Chen Zishan mentioned that Zhang Ailing was not satisfied with this ranking. From the "dream of genius" at the age of 19 to "be famous before it’s too late" in the preface to Legend at the age of 24, Zhang Ailing never concealed her desire to be seen and appreciated, and her early works were rarely published under a pseudonym. However, with the changes of the world, Zhang Ailing gradually began to use a pseudonym to hide herself. According to Chen Zishan’s research, "Shimin", "Liang Jing", "Fan Siping" and "Ai Zhen" are all pseudonyms that Zhang Ailing may have used, and the latter two are related to her translation career.

Zhang Ailing once published the translation "The Old Man and the Sea" as Fan Siping, and the translation "The Long March under the Sea" signed by Ai Zhen in Hong Kong’s Zhongnan Daily. Chen Zishan explained the reason as follows: "Zhang Ailing just arrived in Hong Kong and knew almost nothing about the literary world in Hong Kong in the early 1950s. She didn’t want to reveal her real name, which was once mixed." The reason of "mixed reputation" comes from the entanglement between Zhang Ailing and Hu Lancheng, which is well known to the world today.

After moving to the United States, Zhang Ailing’s tendency to hide herself became more apparent. In 1979, she quoted Hollywood producer Galwin’s phrase "include me" and declined Taipei United Daily News’s request for her recent address and the nature of her work. Chen Zishan found Zhang Ailing’s second quotation of this statement: "When the film crew of’ Writer’s Figure’ wanted to interview her by adopting more modern technical means to’ save’ her images and sounds, she once again quoted’ include me’ and chose to decline." A year after Zhang Ailing wrote a letter to decline the request for filming, she died alone.

Because of this idea, he has been wandering outside for so many years.

  The suspect Zhou Yongsen confessed that during his escape, he never dared to go to places where he needed to prove his identity, did not dare to work, and even dared not rent a house. He could only live in culverts or abandoned houses and make a living by picking up waste plastic bottles. However, it is not easy to live without a fixed place and eat the last meal.

  In March 2014, Zhou Yongsen, who had fled for five years, once again returned to Xuyi to carry out a plan to retaliate against his ex-wife. However, because his ex-wife was not at home, he did not succeed. He fled back to Ningde again. He always feels that he can still hide, wait for the opportunity and commit crimes again as he did last time. What he didn’t expect, however, was that a hunting net had spread.

  On June 8, 2019, the suspect Zhou Yongsen identified the scene under the leadership of the police. At this point, this case that has gone through nearly eleven years has finally been solved.

Jiayuguan City, Gansu Province notified two nucleic acid positive tourists of their activities in Jia.

  On October 18th, the website of Jiayuguan Health and Health Commission reported that Shaanxi Province reported two tourists whose nucleic acid test results were positive and arrived in Jiayuguan by car from Ejina Banner, Inner Mongolia at around 16: 00 on October 14th, 2021. At 9: 00 on October 15th, two people took the initiative to go to Jiayuguan Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital for nucleic acid testing, and the hospital conducted a 10∶1 mixed test according to the requirements of normal testing. After the sampling was completed, two people returned to the hotel to check out and went to Jiayuguan Airport. At 13: 38, they checked in with the negative certificate of nucleic acid testing, the green code of health code and the itinerary code of Ejina Banner People’s Hospital within 48 hours, and took flight MU2165 (Jiayuguan — Xi ‘an) arrived in Xi ‘an at 15: 25.

  At 17: 30 on October 15th, the results of the 10∶1 mixed test in the Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine were suspicious positive, so we contacted 10 people concerned to take samples for re-examination in the hospital, but two of them had already arrived in Xi ‘an. After the other 8 people went to the hospital for sampling, all the rechecking results were negative at 21 o’clock that night. At 21: 40, the staff of Jiayuguan CDC contacted two people by telephone and asked them to do nucleic acid testing as soon as possible in the local area, and continued to track their test results by telephone inquiry. Two people informed that the nucleic acid test had been carried out at the Eighth Hospital of Xi ‘an at 7: 30 on the 16th, and the screenshot of the nucleic acid test report of that day at 22: 20 showed that the result was negative. At 11: 07 on October 17th, I received the Notification Letter from Shaanxi Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention. At 17: 00 on October 16th, the nucleic acid test result was positive, and it was rechecked by Shaanxi Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention. At present, I am observing in the isolation ward of the Eighth Hospital of Xi ‘an.

The two tourists with positive nucleic acid test drove to Jiayuguan by car from Ejina Banner on October 14th, 2021. They arrived at Jiayuguan Guancheng Scenic Spot at around 16: 00, separated from the scenic spot at 18: 10, checked into the 6th floor of Jiayuguan Nuojin Hotel at 18: 26, dined at the Chama Ancient Road restaurant near the hotel from 19: 00 to 21: 00, and returned to the Nuojin Hotel after eating. At 8 o’clock on the 15th, I had breakfast in the restaurant of Nuojin Hotel. At 9: 05, I drove to Jiayuguan Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine for nucleic acid sampling. The trip code and health code of two people were all green codes, and there were no symptoms such as fever and cough. The sampling ended at 9: 45. At 9: 49, go to Wenhua Road gas station to refuel and return to Nuojin Hotel. After checking out at 11: 08, drive to Jiayuguan Airport by car. At 12: 04, return the rented vehicle to the garage. At 13: 38, take MU2165 flight with negative nucleic acid test certificate issued by Ejina Banner People’s Hospital within 48 hours (Jiayuguan — Xi’ an) is away from Jia.

  From 17: 30 on October 15th, the leading group for joint prevention and control of epidemic situation in COVID-19 arranged to deploy the whole city to carry out epidemiological investigation, nucleic acid detection, personnel control and environmental disinfection on the places and contact personnel involved in the two-person trip. The municipal hospital of traditional Chinese medicine carried out environmental disinfection in all areas of the hospital and sampled the object surface, and the test results were all negative; 475 hospital employees, 392 inpatients and their caregivers were tested for nucleic acid, and the results were all negative. The Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention carried out flow survey and sampling in key areas and key personnel involved in the two-person trip, and collected 59 environmental samples and 14 personnel samples, all of which were negative for nucleic acid detection. After preliminary epidemiological investigation, 26 close contacts were found, and all the nucleic acid results were negative. All of them have been centralized and isolated, and the second round of epidemiological investigation is being carried out. Disinfect and dispose of the hotel’s internal and external environment, including lobby, entrance, elevator, catering department, guest room and other public areas, car rental agency, car wash agency and gas station. On October 17th, 133 passengers, staff and 179 airport staff in the hotel were tested for nucleic acid, and the results were all negative.

  At present, our city is further carrying out accurate investigation, flow adjustment and nucleic acid detection, and relevant information will be released in time.

The new format and new mode are the effective force of China’s foreign trade development and an important trend of international trade development. Accelerating the development of new foreign trade formats and new models is conducive to promoting the high-quality development of trade, cultivating new advantages in participating in international economic cooperation and competition, and playing an important role in building a new development pattern for services. In order to thoroughly implement the decision-making arrangements of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, and promote the healthy, sustainable and innovative development of new foreign trade formats and new models, with the consent of the State Council, we hereby put forward the following opinions:

I. General requirements

(1) Guiding ideology.Guided by Socialism with Chinese characteristics Thought of the Supreme Leader in the New Era, we will fully implement the spirit of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth Plenary Sessions of the 19th National Congress, adhere to the general tone of striving for progress while maintaining stability, base ourselves on the new development stage, implement the new development concept, build a new development pattern, deepen the "streamline administration, delegate power, strengthen regulation and improve services" reform in foreign trade with the supply-side structural reform as the main line, and promote institutional innovation, management innovation, service innovation, format innovation and model innovation in foreign trade.

(2) Basic principles.

Insist on encouraging innovation. Give full play to the decisive role of the market in resource allocation, better play the role of the government, and further release the vitality of market players. We will try first, encourage the extensive use of new technologies and tools in the field of foreign trade, promote the transformation and upgrading of traditional formats, refine the division of trade, enhance the level of specialization, promote the integration and innovation of formats, and constantly explore new foreign trade formats and models.

Adhere to tolerance and prudence. Make overall plans for development and safety, and insist on standardization in development and development in standardization. Establish and improve a policy system that adapts to the development of new foreign trade formats and new models. Second, actively support the use of new technologies and tools to empower foreign trade development.

(four) to promote the application of digital intelligence technology.Use digital technology and digital tools to promote the optimization and upgrading of all links in the whole process of foreign trade. Give play to the "long tail effect", integrate fragmented orders and broaden the channels for obtaining orders. Vigorously develop digital exhibitions, social e-commerce, product crowdfunding, big data marketing, etc., and establish a marketing system with online and offline integration and domestic and overseas linkage. Integrate data of all links in foreign trade supply chain, and strengthen resource docking and information sharing. (5) Improve cross-border e-commerce development support policies.Apply the supervision mode of cross-border e-commerce enterprise-to-enterprise (B2B) direct export and cross-border e-commerce export overseas warehouse throughout the country, and improve the supporting policies. Facilitate cross-border e-commerce import and export return management. Optimize the list of cross-border e-commerce retail imports. Steadily carry out the pilot work of cross-border e-commerce retail import drugs. Guide enterprises to make good use of cross-border e-commerce retail export value-added tax, consumption tax exemption policies and income tax verification and collection methods. Study and formulate guidelines for intellectual property protection of cross-border e-commerce and guide cross-border e-commerce platforms to prevent intellectual property risks. Support the comprehensive use of investment and financing methods such as BOT and structured financing to invest in overseas warehouse construction. Give full play to the role of foreign embassies and consulates and business organizations, provide early guidance services for overseas warehouse enterprises, and help resolve disputes. Encourage overseas warehouse enterprises to connect with online comprehensive service platforms in the comprehensive test area and domestic and foreign e-commerce platforms to match supply and demand information. Optimize policies and measures such as express transportation, support overseas warehouse enterprises to establish and improve logistics systems, extend services to the upstream and downstream of the supply chain, and explore the construction of overseas logistics smart platforms. Promote the construction of overseas warehouse standards. Encourage enterprises to explore the construction of big data laboratories for new foreign trade formats. Guide the use of digital means to enhance the value of traditional brands. Encourage the construction of incubation institutions and innovation centers, and support the entrepreneurial innovation of small and medium-sized enterprises. (twelve) to further support the healthy development of foreign trade comprehensive service enterprises.Implement the centralized tax refund filing work and improve work efficiency. For the production enterprises that have filed the tax refund on behalf of the agency but have not yet made the on-site inspection of the first tax refund (exemption), the efficiency of the on-site inspection will be further improved after receiving the declaration information of the first tax refund business entrusted by the agency. Guide foreign trade comprehensive service enterprises (hereinafter referred to as comprehensive service enterprises) to standardize internal risk management and improve the risk management and control level of centralized agency tax refund. Further implement and improve the "double penalty" mechanism of the customs. Under the condition that the comprehensive service enterprise strictly fulfills its reasonable review obligation and there is no intentional or gross negligence, the comprehensive service enterprise and its customers will bear corresponding responsibilities according to the circumstances. (thirteen) to improve the development level of bonded maintenance business.Further support enterprises in the comprehensive bonded area to carry out maintenance business, dynamically adjust the catalogue of maintenance products, and study the inclusion of medical devices and other products in the catalogue. Support enterprises in the Pilot Free Trade Zone to carry out bonded maintenance business with "two ends in the outside" according to the catalogue of maintenance products in the comprehensive bonded zone. The provincial people’s government where the Pilot Free Trade Zone is located will comprehensively evaluate the maintenance projects and independently support them, and assume the main responsibility for the supervision and other matters of the supported projects. Explore and support qualified enterprises outside the comprehensive bonded zone to carry out bonded maintenance of self-produced export products with high technology content, high added value and meeting environmental protection requirements, promote it steadily by pilot, strengthen evaluation, and study and formulate management measures and maintenance product lists. Encourage foreign trade enterprises to build their own independent stations, and support professional station building platforms to optimize and improve service capabilities. Explore the application of blockchain technology in the field of trade segmentation. Enterprises that support new foreign trade formats and new models apply paperless methods to declare tax rebates. (eighteen) increase financial support.Deepen the cooperation between government, banks and enterprises, actively promote the "credit-easy loan" model, encourage financial institutions, non-bank payment institutions, credit reporting institutions and foreign trade service platforms to strengthen cooperation, and provide convenient financial services for enterprises with new foreign trade formats and new models with real trading background. Encourage qualified enterprises with new foreign trade formats and new modes to raise funds through listing and issuing bonds. Accelerate the construction of a trade and financial blockchain platform. Sixth, create a good environment

(twenty) to maintain a good foreign trade order.Strengthen anti-monopoly and anti-unfair competition regulations, focus on preventing and stopping monopoly and unfair competition in new foreign trade formats, protect fair competition and prevent disorderly expansion of capital. Explore the establishment of a credit evaluation system for enterprises with new foreign trade formats and new models, and encourage the establishment of an important product traceability system. Seven, do a good job in organizing the implementation
