  Wang Zeshan, who was born a century later than Nobel, the inventor of explosives, has made a great contribution to the research of explosives, which is called "Nobel of China". Focusing on the research of explosives for more than 60 years, he "studied science with science", followed his own path, made original achievements beyond the foreign level, and made gunpowder, one of the "four great inventions" in ancient China, regain its glory in modern times.

At the 2016 National Science and Technology Awards Conference, Wang Zeshan invented the "long-range, low-overload, equal-module" launch charging technology, which made China’s barrel weapons lead the world in the range, maximum launch overload, muzzle kinetic energy and other core indicators, and won the first prize of the National Technology Invention Award.

  Long-range and modular firing charge are the key technologies to realize "high-efficiency damage, precise strike, quick response and fire suppression" of artillery, and they are also the important development direction of artillery system modernization. Although this worldwide problem has been studied for many years, the core problem has not been completely solved internationally.

  At that time, Wang Zeshan, who had reached retirement age, insisted on gnawing down this "hard bone". After more than 20 years’ research, he created the theory and technology of compensation charge. Through practical verification, the range of Chinese artillery can be improved by more than 20% after the application of this technology, and its ballistic performance completely exceeds that of similar artillery in all countries.

  This is not the first time that Wang Zeshan won the first prize of the National Technological Invention Award. Back in 1996, his invention of "low temperature sensitivity launching charge and technology" also won this honor. Up to now, its material technology, trajectory and long-term storage performance are still superior to foreign technology.

  In peacetime, the smoke is gradually drifting away, but those explosives that have been stored for an extended period may pose great harm to the environment and society. As early as the 1980s, Wang Zeshan took the lead in conquering many key technologies of reusing discarded explosives, reducing environmental pollution and potential safety hazards, turning waste into treasure, and exploring a new way for integration of defense and civilian technologies’s development.

  Over the past 60 years, Wang Zeshan has not only written and published 15 books, but also established "Launching Pharmacy". He has also presided over the compilation of 10 4.1 million-word series textbooks of gunpowder in colleges and universities, and has trained more than 90 doctoral students, many of whom have become leading talents in the fields of explosives, technical research and national defense in China.

  There are so many interesting things in the world, why did Wang Zeshan choose the unpopular explosives major and work for a lifetime? Facing the reporter’s question, the 82-year-old academician talked about his unforgettable experience as a child.

  Wang Zeshan was born in Jilin in 1935. When he was a child, his father often reminded him quietly, "You are Chinese and your country is China."

  "If you don’t do conquered people, you must have a strong national defense." Father’s words made Wang Zeshan make up his mind at an early age. In the summer of 1954, Wang Zeshan applied for Harbin Military Industry as his first choice, and became the only student in his class who volunteered to study explosives.

  Sixty-four years have flown by. From a young boy to an old man, Wang Zeshan’s initial intention of strengthening the army and serving the country has never changed.

  "Until now, Wang Lao is still on a business trip for half of the year, and his working hours are more than 12 hours every day." Liao Xin, the secretary, with a full work schedule every day, felt distressed about Wang Zeshan, who never rested on weekends. "So he doesn’t have the concept of the day of the week, and he talks about the date of the month."

  In the eyes of colleagues and family, Wang Zeshan is a serious "addict" in scientific research. "If his brain doesn’t think about the problem, he will feel uncomfortable all over in a while, just like he has made a cigarette addiction." Professor Xu Fuming, a student of Wang Zeshan and former president of Nanjing University of Science and Technology, told the reporter that Academician Wang was often distracted because of thinking about problems in his life. Sometimes he went to a place to do business, came in through the front door and went out through the back door.

  In the interview, Wang Zeshan revealed the "two chapters about the law" with his lover. "When I work, I don’t bother each other. During the Spring Festival and other long holidays, we agreed to travel. When I arrived at the place, she went out to play normally, and I worked normally in my room. " Academician Wang’s understatement of "normal" made people laugh at the place.

  "If I have made some achievements, it is because the country has given me opportunities, won my own research time, used scientific methods and relied on collective wisdom." Wang Zeshan said that many people habitually refer to foreign solutions and research progress in scientific research nowadays, but he always hopes to "study science with science" and make original achievements beyond the foreign level.

  Scientific research is "very hard" and life is "very easy": "afraid of trouble", he enjoys it on the road of scientific research

  In the research of explosives, it is often necessary to choose extreme conditions to do experiments outdoors, and it is common that the temperature is extremely hot and the temperature is extremely cold. However, Wang Zeshan, who is over 80 years old, has to visit the front line every time. "The explosives experiment is more dangerous. I have been doing it for decades, and I am more experienced than young people. I am also at ease when I go to the scene."

  Just one month before the award, Wang Zeshan went to the desert twice to do experiments. "Once he took us to do an experiment, and the data acquisition instruments didn’t work at MINUS 27 degrees Celsius, but he persisted for a week and worked for more than 10 hours a day." In the view of researcher Du Ping, a member of Wang Zeshan’s team, Wang Lao is so energetic in scientific research that many young people can’t catch up.

  So "desperate" in scientific research, but very "will" in life. When going to Beijing for business meetings, Wang Zeshan often likes to stay in a hostel in the basement of a scientific research unit. Although the conditions are difficult, he has to run far away to go to the toilet and take a shower, but he is willing to do it. "The biggest advantage is that no one is disturbed and you can think about things quietly."

  In Wang Zeshan’s office and home, a lot of convenient food is stored, which is often his three meals a day. "I don’t have any requirements for life. It’s good to have a meal. It’s no problem to be busy without eating or sleeping." Wang Zeshan said that when he was a child, he suffered a lot. When he was young, he loved sports and developed a good body to support scientific research.

  Everyone around you knows that Academician Wang is most afraid of "trouble". When attending academic meetings, he always leaves after the meeting and does not attend the dinner after the meeting; I don’t need a secretary or other people to accompany me on a business trip. I’m basically alone. Once he was invited to an activity, because he was dressed in ordinary clothes and was alone, the on-site staff stopped him and asked him, "Are you a driver?" .

  Wang Zeshan, who was afraid of trouble, never bothered others. According to the regulations, academicians can be equipped with cars. But for decades, he never asked the school for a car when he went out, and he didn’t want others to send him. The traffic problems were solved by himself.

  Just after receiving the award, the honorary "post-80 s" old academician launched an ambitious attack on new goals. "Smokeless gunpowder has not solved the problem of solvent-free manufacturing technology for more than 100 years, and we are planning to replace the existing technology with a subversive invention."
